The HR licence class is one of the most popular in Australia, as it allows you to drive a wide range of heavy vehicles. You will need to hold a HR licence if you wish to be a heavy general freight delivery driver, coach/bus driver, furniture removalist, tow truck driver, refrigerated transport driver and more.
HR vehicles include the following:
Trucks and buses with a GVM more than eight tonnes, and three or more axles
Any towed trailer must not weigh more than nine tonnes GVM
Bendy buses. These vehicles are articulated, but they are treated as rigid vehicles.
Requirements to Obtain HR Licence
In order to apply for your HR licence, you must satisfy the following criteria:
You must have held a class C licence for an equivalent of two years or more. Learner licence is not included, but time spent holding a P1 licence can be considered. Note that you cannot practice to drive an HR vehicle or upgrade to an HR licence until you hold a P2 or full class C licence.
Pass the RMS HR knowledge test
Pass the RMS eyesight test
Once you have met the three simple criteria listed above, you are ready to commence HR training with Dames Driving School. Our Heavy Rigid Training Course
Our course is intensive, aiming to cover 15 key criteria during a one-on-one training session. One of our friendly instructors will assist you in gaining confidence behind the wheel of large, heavy vehicles. Safety is the cornerstone of our training, and we aim to ensure that every student leaves with a complete understanding of how to handle a HR vehicle safely in a variety of conditions. We will take you through the fundamental requirements for driving HR vehicles, as well as show you some defensive driving practices that will keep both yourself and the public safe on the roads.
We operate HR training courses 7 days a week, and we can be flexible to accommodate your schedule. Every one of our instructors speaks Hindi Punjabi, Sri Lankan and English, and our courses are tailored to the needs of the Indian community.
Courses consist of a combination of pre-drive theory and driver training. Once our instructors feel you have gained sufficient competency behind the wheel, you can apply for assessment. During assessment your driving skills will be observed by a licensed assessor. Upon passing, you will be eligible to obtain your HR licence from the RMS.
Driving a heavy vehicle requires in depth knowledge and an understanding of best practice when it comes to managing your load. We will discuss appropriate load restraint methods and how to ensure safety during loading and unloading. If loads are not secured properly, injury and damage to people/property can occur. In your career as a professional HR driver, you will be carrying heavy loads on long haul routes. By following the safety principles highlighted in our course, you can ensure maximum safety and on-time deliveries.
