If you are looking to embark on a career as a semi-trailer driver, you will need to hold a HC licence. This licence class covers vehicles including prime movers, pig trailers, floats, low loaders and truck and dogs. The HC licence class is required for a number of careers including tanker driver, road construction/quarry driver, refrigerated transport, container transport, heavy general freight, bulk garden supplies and more. The RMS specifies that a HC licence must be held to operate the following:
Articulated vehicles with three or more axles
Heavy rigid vehicle trailer combinations including unladen dolly, with three or more axles
Any towed trailer with a GVM greater than nine tonnes
Many people prefer to obtain their HC licence before moving on to the MC licence, as it will provide them with valuable experience and an understanding of what it is like to drive with a single trailer. You will gain the confidence, safety knowledge and skills necessary for the MC licence upgrade in future, and it will also be beneficial for your insurance policy. Many employers will also look upon a HC licence favourably.
Requirements to obtain HC Licence
In order to apply for your HC licence, you must satisfy the following criteria:
You must have held a MR, HR licence (open or P class) for a minimum of 12 months
You must pass the RMS driver knowledge test
You must pass the on-road HC practical test at Dames Driving School
You must pass the competency assessment at Dames Driving School
NOTE: If you have any medical conditions on your licence, you must bring a medical certificate to accompany the class of licence you are applying for.
If you have held an HR or HC licence for a period of 12 months or more, you may be eligible to obtain a MC (multi combination) truck licence. MC vehicles are those which tow more than 1 trailer.
Once you have met the above criteria and determined whether you would like to apply for a HC or MC licence, you are now ready to book a session with Dames Driving School. Our course is intensive, and you will be trained one-on-one by one of our friendly instructors. We will teach you how to start, steer, manoeuvre and stop MC vehicles in addition to highlighting safety and practicing some defensive driving techniques.
Another key element of our course is a component on fastening. Multi combination vehicles carry heavy loads which are prone to shifting. We will discuss the best ways to safely load your vehicle, as well as the best restraint methods to keep your load secure. We will also take you through the coupling and un-coupling procedures, so that you have a complete understanding of how to operate your MC vehicle and keep both yourself and the public safe.
