HC – Heavy Combination Truck Licence

If you are looking to embark on a career as a semi-trailer driver, you will need to hold a HC licence. This licence class covers vehicles including prime movers, pig trailers, floats, low loaders and truck and dogs. The HC licence class is required for a number of careers including tanker driver, road construction/quarry driver, refrigerated transport, container transport, heavy general freight, bulk garden supplies and more. The RMS specifies that a HC licence must be held to operate the following:

  • Articulated vehicles with three or more axles
  • Heavy rigid vehicle trailer combinations including unladen dolly, with three or more axles
  • Any towed trailer with a GVM greater than nine tonnes

Many people prefer to obtain their HC licence before moving on to the MC licence, as it will provide them with valuable experience and an understanding of what it is like to drive with a single trailer. You will gain the confidence, safety knowledge and skills necessary for the MC licence upgrade in future, and it will also be beneficial for your insurance policy. Many employers will also look upon a HC licence favourably.

Requirements to obtain HC Licence

In order to apply for your HC licence, you must satisfy the following criteria:

  • You must have held a MR, HR licence (open or P class) for a minimum of 12 months
  • You must pass the RMS driver knowledge test
  • You must pass the on-road HC practical test at Dames Driving School
  • You must pass the competency assessment at Dames Driving School
  • NOTE: If you have any medical conditions on your licence, you must bring a medical certificate to accompany the class of licence you are applying for.

If you have held an HR or HC licence for a period of 12 months or more, you may be eligible to obtain a MC (multi combination) truck licence. MC vehicles are those which tow more than 1 trailer.
